3 August – 30 August 2016
Sudah Makan? Translated from Malay, this question “Have you eaten?” transcends across ethnicity, religion and region, especially in this part of the world. we often replace everyday greetings such as “How are you?” or “How’s your day going?” with “Have you eaten?” in different languages—English, Chinese, Malay, Hokkien, Cantonese, etc. It is common for relationships, bonds, traditions, culture are formed, fostered, strengthened and affirmed over food. Many of us have great memories formed around food. These foods have become special to us and have a distinctive place in our hearts. Artists Arlyn de Jesus, Beth Cheong, Benison Cheong, Don Low, Paul Wang, Ong Hwee Yen, William Sim and Xin Xiaochang explore the emotions and ties we form with our eating habits and traditions through their paintbrushes topresent their favourite food, their memories attached to it, and more importantly, the significance of the experience to them.
